Purple Knights Plate Four Runs In The Bottom Of The Ninth To Post Wild 12-11 Baseball Win Over Wilmington (Del.) University
UB Now 3-1 On The Season
Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team came back to score four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to post a 12-11 win over the Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats to close out the South Carolina portion of the annual Spring Trip on Sunday afternoon. With the win, UB is now 3-1 overall. Wilmington is now 2-2 on the young season.
On Sunday, the Purple Knights led 7-2 after five innings only to see the Wildcats grab an 11-7 advantage when they scored one in the sixth and eight runs in the seventh before Bridgeport plated one in the bottom on the eighth and the afore mentioned four runs in the ninth to win the game.
In the decisive bottom of the ninth, junior Jacob Rich (Northwood, N.H.) slammed a two-run homer to tie the game at 11-11 with one out, and then the Purple Knights capitialized on two Wilcats' errors to score the winning run with two outs.
UB sophomore Justin Leigh (Bridgeport, Conn.) continued his hot start at the plate this season going 4-for-5 on the day with three runs batted in.
Graduate student Alex Rauso (Trumbull, Conn.) added three hits for the winners, including a key double in the ninth, and newcomer Jeremy Rodrigues (Fr., Monroe, Conn.) also had hits on the day for Bridgeport.
Freshman Giovanni Valerio (Bayside, N.Y.) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the win in his collegiate debut.
Up next, the UB baseball team heads to Florida for the Sunshine State portion of their Spring Trip which will open up with a single game at the University of Tampa on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
