Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team opened its 2022 season in Myrtle Beach. S.C. on Friday with a doubleheader split against the Chestnut Hill College Griffins. UB took the opener, 13-11, and fell in the nightcap, 4-3.
In game one, a nine-inning contest, Bridgeport trailed 5-2 after the top of the sixth inning, but the Purple Knights came back to score six runs in the bottom of the sixth and plate four more in the seven to take a 12-5 lead which the never relinquished.
Five Purple Knights, Michael Fletcher (Fr., Winter Park, Fla.), Jake Woods (So., Stony Brook, N.Y.), Alex Rauso (Grad., Trumbull, Conn.), Jacob Rich (Jr., Northwood, N.H.) and Craig Leonard (Sr., Holtsville, N.Y.) each had two hits for the winners.
Lenard knocked in three runs in game one, and Woods and Justin Leigh (So., Bridgeport. Conn.) each had two RBI for UB.
On the mound, sophomore Jason Giambra (Milford, Conn.) picked up the win in relief, and senior Matthew Wirz (Stamford, Conn.) got the final two outs of the game to earn a save.
In game two, a seven-inning contest, the Purple Knights came back to tie the game at 3-3 with three runs in the top of the seventh, but the Griffins walked off with the win on a two-out, bases loaded error.
Jake Woods stayed hot at the plate in the nightcap banging out two more hits and driving in a run.
Up next, the UB baseball team will take on LeMoyne College in Myrtle Beach on Saturday morning. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
