Baseball Battles But Falls In Extra Innings At Staten Island
Dolphins Top Purple Knights, 14-13, In Ten Innings
Staten Island, N.Y.-The host College of Staten Island Dolphins scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of tenth inning to salvage the final game of a three-game East Coast Conference series with the University of Bridgeport with a 14-13 extra inning victory. With the loss, the Purple Knights are now an even 3-3 overall and in conference play. CSI is now 1-5, both overall and in the ECC.
UB trailed by scores of 9-4 and 11-7 on the day, only to battle back to grab a 12-11 lead heading to the eighth, only to see the Dolphins, who benefited from six Bridgeport errors on the day, tie things at 12-12 with an unearned tally.
Graduate student Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.) going his red-hot start to the season at the plate going 4-for-6 with four runs batted, as he clubbed a two-run, first inning homer and also added a triple.
Junior Ryan Donnelly (Fairfield, Conn.) also hit a two-run home run, as he went 2-for-3 at the dish and drew three walks and scored three times.
Senior Matt Rodriguez (New Milford, Conn.) finished with two hits on the afternoon, both doubles, and drove in two runs and scored three.
Junior Justin Hafele (Shelton, Conn.), the fourth Bridgeport pitcher of the game, took the loss working 3.1 innings in which he allowed three runs, only one of which was earned.
The UB baseball team is back on the diamond on Friday afternoon at Mercy College, when the Mavericks and the Purple Knights open a three-game East Coast Conference series with a 3:00 p.m. single game in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
