Aston, Pa.-The University of Bridgeport of Bridgeport baseball team upped its East Coast Conference record to 14-12 and its overall mark to 18-26 with a road doubleheader sweep over the host Lincoln (Pa.) University Lions on Friday afternoon, taking game one, 10-3, and completing the sweep with an 11-0 shutout in the nightcap. The Purple Knights have now won four games in a row. With the two losses, the Lions are now 1-38 overall and 0-26 in conference play.
In game one, sophomore Vincent DeRubeis (Trumbull, Conn.) had three RBI and clubbed his fourth home run of the year for UB, and junior Alex Rauso (Trumbull, Conn.) drove in a pair for the winners, who had a total of 12 hits.
Junior Jason Burger (Orlando, Fla.) earned his third win of the season working 8.1 innings in the opener striking out 10 Lincoln batters.
In game two, Rauso had three hits including a home run and added two runs batted. DeRubeis had a triple and two more RBI, and sophomore Conall Roberts (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) also knocked in two runs.
On the mound, three UB pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout, as senior, starter Christopher Martucci (Ridgefield, N.J.) fanned eight in 7.2 innings of work, and he was followed on the bump by freshman Anthony Jacabacci (Brookhaven, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Tonelli (Milford, Conn.).
The same two teams will wrap up the 2019 regular season on Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader in Pennsylvania.
