Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball salvaged a split in a home East Coast Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon by winning game two against the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights, 7-4, as they wiped away a 3-1 deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and three more in the sixth, after falling in the opener by a score of 4-2. With the split, the Purple Knights are now 13-23 overall and an even 9-9 in conference action. QC is now 21-14-1 and 10-8 in the ECC.
In game one, freshman Joey Grillo (Sound Beach, N.Y.) three hits and senior Eamon Catherina (Ridgefield, N.J.) and freshman Cory Listing (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) each drove in a run.
Listing had a big, two-RBI single in the fifth inning which gave UB a 4-3 lead which the team never relinquished.
Sophomore Conall Roberts (Mt, Laurel, N.J.) had huge game at the plate for the winners in the nightcap going 4-for-4 with two RBI.
Eamon Catherina and freshman Ryan Donnelly (Fairfield, Conn.) each had two hits for the Purple Knights in game two, and junior Alex Rauso (Trumbull, Conn.) plus sophomores Tyler Popp (Killingworth, Conn.) and Vincent DeRubeis (Trumbull, Conn.) also had runs batted in for Bridgeport in the victory.
On the mound, starter, junior Jason Burger (Orlando, Fla.) earned his second win of 2019 going the first five innings of the contest, and classmate Jonathan Brooks (Stratford, Conn.) record the final two outs of the game with the base loaded to picks up his first save of the season.
The same two teams will close out their four-game conference series with a pair of single. Nine-inning games at Queens (N.Y.) College on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.
