Baseball Blanks St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-0, To Take Opening Conference Series Of 2019 Three Games To One
Christopher Martucci Fires Masterful Five-Hit, Nine-Inning Complete Game Shutout And Vincent DeRubeis Hits His Third Home Run of the Season On Monday
Bridgeport, Conn.-Senior Christopher Martucci (Ridgefield, N.J.) spun a five-hit, nine-inning complete game shutout, and sophomore Vincent DeRubeis (Trumbull, Conn.) hit a two-run homer, his third big fly of the season, in the fourth inning, to help lead the University of Bridgeport baseball team to a 3-0 win over the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans in Seaside Park on Monday afternoon. The victory moves UB's season record to 6-14 overall, and the team is now 3-1 in East Coast Conference play, as the Purple Knights took three of four games from the Spartans to open the 2019 conference slate. STAC is now 9-11 overall and 1-3 in the ECC.
Martucci was masterful on the on mound on Monday striking out five and walking four to earn his first win of the season.
DeRubeis finished with two hits on the day, as did freshman Ryan Donnelly (Fairfield, Conn.), who had a double and a triple for the winners. Sophomore Patrick Palmer (Ansonia, Conn.) plated Bridgeport's first run on Monday with a second inning sacrifice fly.
Up next, the UB baseball team will open a four-game East Coast Conference weekend series with the Mercy College mavericks on Friday afternoon at home with a single game. First Pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
