Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team opened its 2015 season in chilly South Carolina on Friday, and the Purple Knights fell to the Southern New Hampshire Penmen, 16-1. With the win, SNU is now 1-3 on the year.
The Penmen raced out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and never looked back, as they plated runs in all but two innings in which they came to the plate.
Bridgeport scored its only run of the day in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) tripled and was balked home.
Joining McCone in the hit column for UB were seniors John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) and Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) plus freshman Kevin Fich (Bronx, N.Y.) and Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.).
Starting pitching Dakota Edwards (So., Turlock, Calf.) took the loss on the mound for UB in the season opener.
The Purple Knights will look to pick up their first win of 2015 on Saturday in Myrtle Beach when they take on the Golden Falcons of Felician College in a doubleheader that begins at 10:00 a.m.
