Baseball Back In Win Column With 7-3 Victory Over C.W. Post
Pitcher Matt Wing Goes The Distance For the Purple Knights
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team remained undefeated at home in the young 2012 season, as the Purple Knights posted a 7-3 win over the visiting C.W. Post Pioneers in a game that did not count in the East Coast Conference standings. With the win, UB is now 3-6 overall, and the Pioneers slip to 7-10 overall with the defeat.
With the scored tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bridgeport scored three two out runs on an RBI single by junior catcher Zach Theulen (West Springfield, Mass.), his second run batted in of the game, and a two-RBI double to center field by pinch hitter Ryan Barba (Sr., Stratford, Conn.) to take a 6-3 lead which they never relinquished.
Junior Matt Wing (Brockville, Ontario, Canada) was outstanding on the mound for the Purple Knights picking up his first win of 2012, as he hurled a completed game in which he allowed only five hits. Wing struck out seven and walked two as he became the first UB pitcher to go the distance this season.
The Bridgeport offense banged out 14 hits in the win lead by senior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.) and junior Berny Polanco (Dominican Republic) who each went 3-for-5. Ranaudo also one RBI and scored two runs,
Junior Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Kyle Ferri (Milford, Conn.) each had two hits for Bridgeport.
Next up for the Purple Knights, UB will try to keep its 2012 home record unblemished on Sunday afternoon when they return to the diamond at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard for a 2:30 p.m. contest versus Caldwell College.
