Volleyball Back In The Win Column With Four-Set Triumph At Mercy
Three Purple Knights Reach Double-Digit Kills On The Night
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team got back in the win column on Wednesday night, as the Purple Knights posted a four-set, East Coast Conference road victory over the host Mercy College Mavericks in Victory Hall. UB topped Mercy, 25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22. With the win, Bridgeport is now 9-8 overall and wrapped up the first round of ECC play at 4-2. Mercy is now 8-10 overall, and the Mavericks are also 4-2 in conference action.
Freshman Paola Hernandez (Bayamon, P.R.) led the UB offense with 13 total kills, and graduate student Amanda Hennemann (Nova Petropolis, Brazil) plus senior Amanda Keller (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), each chipped in 11 kills for the winners. Keller was red-hot with her swings on Wednesday, as she hit a blistering .611, notching her 11 kills on 18 attacks with no errors.
Senior Emily Burford (Albuquerque, N.M.) fell one kill shy of double digits with nine, and she led UB in service aces at Mercy with three.
Freshman setter Jaden Drollinger (Queens Creek, Az.) recorded her ninth double-double of 2021 on Wednesday, as she orchestrated the Purple Knights' offense with 43 assists and led the team on defense with 14 digs.
As a team, Bridgeport hit .276 in the victory; while Mercy hit .174 in the four sets.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team will look to start a winning streak on Friday night at home when the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University come to Hubbell Gym. Action is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
