Purple Knights Rally From Two Sets Down To Top Southern Connecticut, 3-2, In Volleyball Action
UB Goes 2-1 At The Post University Invitational To Up Season Record To 3-2
Waterbury, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team played its' second five-set match in as many days on Saturday evening to close out action at the Post University Invitational, and the Purple Knights rallied from a two sets to none deficit to top the Southern Connecticut State University Owls, 3-2. With the win, UB is now 3-2 in the early going of the 2021 campaign having gone 2-1 at Post defeating SCSU and the host school and falling in five sets to New Haven early on Friday. The Owls are now 6-2 overall. Set scores from Saturday were: 16-25, 21-25, 25-17, 28-26, 15-10.
Trailing 8-6 in the fifth and deciding set, Bridgeport went on a 6-0 run to grab a 12-8 lead which they never relinquished on their way to the victory.
Freshman Paola Hernandez (Bayamon, P.R.) continued her stellar play to open her debut season at UB leading the team with 16 kills. Senior Amanda Keller (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) also reached double figures in kills in the win over SCSU with 10.
Freshman setter Jaden Drollinger (Queens Creek, Ariz.) notched a double-double on Saturday, as she doled out 38 assists and had 10 digs. She also contributed five service aces and two kills for the winners.
Graduate student Amanda Hennemann (Nova Petropolis, Brazil) anchored the Bridgeport defense with a team-leading 13 digs.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of Hubbell Gym for a non-conference home match on Wednesday night against the Adelphi University Panthers. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
