Ying Shen Earns Third Team National 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Capital One Academic All-America Accolades
A Total Of Six UB Student-Athletes Have Now Earned National Academic All-American Honors In The Last Three Seasons
Austin, Texas-University of Bridgeport senior women's volleyball standout Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) has been named to the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Capital One National Academic All-America Third Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for her outstanding efforts in the classroom and on the court. Shen is an Accounting major at Bridgeport with a 3.95 cumulative grade point average.
A three-time American Volleyball Coaches of America (AVCA) All-East Region selection, Ying was named the Most Outstanding Player of this season's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament (she also won the ECC MOP award in 2012), as she helped the Purple Knights win their third consecutive conference title and reach the NCAA Division II East Region Championship for the fifth time in six years. Shen finished third on the team in kills per set at 2.51 and third on the team in digs per set at 2.67 helping UB post an impressive 26-2 overall record.
Shen's selection also marks the sixth time in the last three seasons that a Bridgeport student-athlete has garnered National Capital One Academic All-America honors as selected by CoSIDA. She joins women's soccer's Julia Hansson (Second Team in 2012 and First Team in 2013), men's swimming's Ruben Gimenez (First Team Men's At-Large in 2014 plus Academic All-America of the Year honors) and Oscar Pereiro (Second Team Men's At-Large in 2014) plus women's soccer Tabea Rauschenberger earlier this season.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
