UB Volleyball Advances To Regional Semifinal With 3-0 Sweep of Post University
Purple Knights Move T0 25-2 On The Season With 25-13, 25-23, 25-12 Triumph Over The Eagles
Bridgeport, Conn.–The top-seeded University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team defeated the eight-seeded Post University Eagles in three sets, 25-13, 25-23, 25-12, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament. The victory increases the Purple Knights record to 25-2, as they have now won 13 matches in a row, and remain unbeaten on their home court at 12-0. Post finishes their 2014 season at 22-11, including a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship.
In the first set, Bridgeport jumped out to a 7-2 lead as they cruised to a 25-13 victory. As a team the Purple Knights had 15 kills with a .400 attack percentage, compared to Post who hit a .037 attack percentage.
The Eagles came out of the break matching Bridgeport point-for-point for most of the second set. With the second stanza tied at 22-22, the Purple Knights took the next two points with kills from Frida Randen (So., Sodertalje, Sweden) and Ying Shen (Sr., Nanjing, China) to put the set in UB's favor, a set they would win 25-23. UB continued their hot hitting with a .325 attack percentage for the set.
In the third set, Bridgeport led early and then used a late run to finish off the game. With the set at 10-7, UB closed out the match by scoring 15 of the final 20 points to win 25-12. Again Bridgeport attacked with a .375 percentage, while Post hit for a -.056 percentage.
The Purple Knights were lead on the night by graduate student Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) who notched a match-high 13 kills (.500 attack percentage) to go along with her 18 assists and four service aces. Savic had help as three other Purple Knights finished with seven kills apiece on the night, Randen, Sarah Rosa (Jr., Itajuba, Brazil), and Larissa Oliveira (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil).
Setter Giovana Soares (Grad., Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished the night with 15 assists for the winners. Junior libero Martina Santia (Sezze, Italy) anchorched the defense with 14 digs.
Skylar German finished with 11 kills for the Eagles on the night.
Bridgeport advances to the regionalsemifinal match on Friday November 21 at 7:30 pm. They await the winner of the #5 Adelphi vs. #4 Bentley match.
