University Of Bridgeport To Host NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship East Regional For Second Straight Season
Purple Knights Are The Number One Seed And Making Their Seventh Consecutive NCAA Trip-Action Takes Place In Hubbell Gym From November 20-22
Indianapolis, Ind.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Gary Mullin, will host the 2014 NCAA Division II Championship East Regional in UB's Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium from Thursday November 20 through Saturday November 22. On Thursday, November 20, the top-seeded Purple Knights, three--time defending East Coast Conference Champions, face the number eight seed, Post University Eagles at 5:00 p.m. This year's marks the seventh consecutive NCAA appearance for UB and second straight season Bridgeport has hosted the East Regional. Last season, the Purple Knights swept Georgian Court in Round One and fell in five-sets in the semifinals to the University of New Haven. In 2012, Bridgeport advanced to the NCAA East Regional Final defeating Dowling and Adelphi before falling in the Regional Final to the host New Haven in a memorable five-set contest. Three years ago, Bridgeport won the NCAA Division II East Regional for the first time in school history defeating NYIT, Dowling and the host University of New Haven. UB fell to the University of Tampa in the 2011 National Quarterfinals hosted by Cal State San Bernardino. In 2010, the Purple Knights defeated American International and New Haven before falling in the regional final to Dowling for the second straight season. In 2009, Bridgeport topped UMass Lowell and New Haven before falling to Dowling. In 2008, Bridgeport, making the program's first-ever NCAA trip, defeated Bentley University in its regional opener before falling to Dowling College in the regional semifinals.
Joining UB and Post in the 2014 NCAA Division II Championship East Regional are: number two seed, University of New Haven (21-8), number three seed Stonehill (21-7), number four seed Bentley (18-11), number five seed Adelphi (16-14), number six seed, LIU Post (19-13) and number seven seed, College of St. Rose (18-8).
UB enters this year's NCAA Championship with an overall record of 24-2. The Purple Knights have won 12 matches in a row and 21 of their last 22 outings. Post University is 22-10.
