UB Volleyball Sweeps Roberts Wesleyan To Earn A Spot In 2014 ECC Title Match
Purple Knights Will Face LIU Post Looking For Third Straight Conference Crown On Saturday Night
Bridgeport, Conn.- The top-seeded University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team earned a chance to keep the East Coast Conference crown for a third straight year as they defeated the fourth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, 29-27, 25-14, 25-14, on Friday night in the tournament semifinals. With the victory the Purple Knights improve their record to 23-2 overall and notching their eleventh consecutive win. Roberts Wesleyan finishes their 2014 campaign with a 16-11 overall record after clinching their first conference tournament berth in school history.
After being named East Coast Conference Player of the Year for the second straight year, Biljana Savic (Grad., Novi Sad, Serbia) showed why she has earned that distinction. Savic led the Purple Knights with 13 kills and 21 assists, both team highs, while just missing out on a triple-double with seven digs.
Senior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) and junior Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) each finished the night posing a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Rosa chipped in three services aces and the 10 digs were tied for the team high with Shen.
Graduate Student setter Giovana Soares (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 20 assists and six digs for the Purple Knights.
Courtney Taylor led the way for Roberts Wesleyan with a match-high 15 kills.
Bridgeport will now face the third-seeded LIU Post Pioneers, who defeated the number two seed, Dowling College, in four set for the 2014 ECC title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament
