UB Volleyball Makes It A Happy Senior Night With Sweep Of Mercy
Purple Knights Now 20-2 Overall And Stay Perfect In ECC Play At 15-0
Bridgeport, Conn.-It was a happy Senior Night for the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team, as the Purple Knights swept the Mercy College Mavericks, 25-6, 25-8, 25-6, in East Coast Conference action on Thursday night. With Wednesday's victory, the Purple Knights are now 20-2 overall and remain unbeaten in the ECC at 15-0. Bridgeport heads into the final week of the 2014 regular season on an eight-match win streak, and the Purple Knights have won 17 of 18 contests. Mercy is now 5-23 overall and 1-13 in conference play.
Before play began on Thursday, the Purple Knights honored their six seniors: Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia), Giovana Soares (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Michele Santos (Campinas, Brazil), Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) and Amanda Kunrath (Ivoti, Brazil).
Savic led all players in the match with nine kills and 13 assists. She also had nine digs and added four service aces and three blocks.
Oliveira and Shen each had eight kills. Larissa chipped in four blocks and four assists, and Shen added six digs and two service aces.
Kunrath had four kills and three blocks on the night, and Santos tied for the team-lead in digs with Savic at nine.
Soares had double-digit assists with 11, and she also contributed seven digs and three service aces.
The Purple Knights will next play two road matches next week to complete their 2014 regular season schedule. On Tuesday night, UB will play an important regional, non-conference match at Adelphi and on Thursday, the team travels to Queens (N.Y.) College to wrap up ECC play. Both of those match-ups will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Bridgeport's next home contest will be on Friday, November 14 at 5:00 p.m. in semifinal number one of the 2014 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament which UB will host in Hubbell Gym for the third consecutive season.
