Purple Knights Now 11-2 Overall And 8-1 In Conference Play
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team found itself in a tough East Coast Conference battle with the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights in New York City on Thursday night, as the Purple Knights prevailed in five sets, 25-22, 20-25, 25-11, 12-25, 15-6. UB is now 11-2 overall and 8-1 in the ECC, and Thursday's win runs Bridgeport's winning streak to five, and the team has won nine of its last 10 contests. QC is now 9-9 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
After trading wins in the first four sets, the Purple Knights dominated Queens in the decisive fifth set, as they raced out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back posting an impressive .429 attack percentage in set number five. Thursday's victory also gives UB the season series sweep over QC after the Purple Knights posted a 3-1 home win in late September.
Junior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) recorded her ninth double-double of 2013 at Queens smashing a match-leading 18 kills with 12 digs.
After Shen's 18 kills, the rest of the Bridgeport offense was extremely balanced with junior Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) with nine kills, sophomore Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) with eight kills plus freshman Frida Randen (Sodertalje, Sweden) and junior Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) each chipped in seven kills.
Rosa fell just shy of a double-double, as she had nine digs to go along with her eight kills, and Savic added 21 assists and eight digs for the winners.
Senior Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) also had 21 assists, and sophomore libero Martina Santia (Sezze, Italy) led the Purple Knights with 13 digs.
