Bridgeport Voleyball Prevails In Four Sets At NYIT In Battle Of ECC's Top Two Teams
UB Ups First Place Conference Record To 9-1
Old Westbury, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team increased its lead atop the East Coast Conference standings to a game and a half with a heart-pounding, four-set road win over second place NYIT in front of a loud and packed house on Long Island on Thursday night. UB prevailed over the Bears, 25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 30-28. Thursday's victory is Bridgeport's fifth in a row, and the Purple Knights are now 17-4 overall and 9-1 in the ECC. NYIT is now 16-6 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
Sophomores Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) and Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) each recorded double-doubles for the Purple Knights, as they each crushed a match-high 19 kills plus Shen had 14 digs and Savic added 12 digs for the winners. Shen had a .485 attack percentage (19 k-3e-33 ta) on the night, and she also contributed five block assists.
Sophomore Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) played well at the net for UB, as he had seven kills and recorded eight total blocks (one solo and seven block assists).
Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C. Canada) had 20 digs to lead Bridgeport, and sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) directed the UB offense with 36 assists plus she also had nine digs.
Shelby Cable led the Bears with 15 kills.
The Bridgeport women's volleyball team returns home to Hubbell Gym on Saturday afternoon (October 27) for an East Coast Conference clash against Queens (N.Y.) College. Action is set to get underway at 2:00 p.m.
