Volleyball Picks Up 3-1 Non-Conference Home Win Over Franklin Pierce
Purple Knights Grab Fourth Straight Win And Up Season Mark To 10-2
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team raised its overall record to 10-2 and won its fourth consecutive match, as the Purple Knights defeated the visiting Franklin Pierce University Ravens, 3-1, in a non-conference contest on Friday night. Playing only its second home match of the 2012 campaign, UB topped FPU, 25-16, 25-21, 14-25, 25-15. Franklin Pierce is now 7-9 overall.
Sophomores Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) led the Bridgeport offense with 16 kills, and she was joined in double-figure kills by classmate Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) with 15. Both Savic and Shen notched double-double, as they registered 14 and 12 digs respectively.
Savic also did an excellent job from beyond the serving line with two service aces, and she also served out the final eight points of the match to give UB the 25-15 win in the fourth and deciding set.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) directed the offense to the tune of a game-high 36 assists.
On defense for the Purple Knights, senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) led the team with 18 digs, and sophomore Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had five block assists.
After taking the weekend off, the UB volleyball team returns to East Coast Conference play on Tuesday night as they continue a five-match homestand with a 7:00 p.m. tilt versus Mercy College.
