Purple Knights Go 1-1 On Final Day Of 2012 AIC Yellow Jacket Volleyball Invitational
UB Falls 3-1 To American International And Sweeps Saint Anselm
Springfield, Mass.-The UB women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the 2012 Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts dropping a 3-1 decision to the hosts (25-22, 17-25, 20-25, 22-25) to open the day and sweeping Saint Anselm, 3-0, (25-19, 25-11, 25-10) to wrap up the first weekend of the season. The Purple Knights went 3-1 to open the 2012 campaign at the Yellow Jacket Invitational.
Against AIC, sophomore Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) led Bridgeport with nine kills, and she also added 11 digs. Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) excelled on defense with 24 digs. Sophomore Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was solid at the net with six block assists.
In the second match of the day, UB handed Saint Anselm its first loss of the 2012 season, as sophomore Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) led the team with 10 kills. McBeth contributed 17 digs, and sophomore setters Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) with 19 assists and Michele Santos (Campinas, Brazil) with 12 assists directed the Purple Knights' offense.
Taylor McBeth and Larissa Oliveira were selected to the weekend's All-Tournament Team in a vote of participating coaches.
Bridgeport returns to the court for its home opener on Saturday, September 8 when UB and Saint Anselm will meet in a rematch of Sunday's action. First serve in Hubbell Gym is set for 2:00 p.m.
