Four Wins In A Row For Volleyball As UB Tops AIC In Four Sets
Purple Knights Now 12-3 Overall And Team Has Won Nine Of Last 11 Contests
Bridgeport, Conn.-Just as they did in the first round of the 2010 NCAA East Regional Tournament last November, the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team defeated the American International College Yellow Jackets, 3-1, (25-11, 26-24, 21-25, 25-16). The victory is UB's fourth in a row and ninth in the team's last 11 matches, as the Purple Knights are now 12-3 overall. AIC falls to 8-12 overall. The win also punctuate a perfect three match wins in three nights for Bridgeport.
Senior Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led Bridgeport on both offense and defense slamming a match-leading 15 kills and recording a team-high 13 digs.
Freshman Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) joined Costa in double-digit kills with 14, and she recorded a double-double with 10 digs.
Senior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil) played an excellent all-around match recording 37 assists, seven digs, four kills, two service aces and three block assists.
At the net for the Purple Knights, freshman Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was dominant, as she had nine total blocks (two solos and seven block assists). Larissa led Bridgeport in blocking on the season averaging 1.12 blocks per set so far in 2011.
UB had its best serving match as a team so far this season on Friday night, as the Purple Knights posted a season-high 14 service aces.
Blair Havron led AIC with 11 kills in the match.
UB is back in action on Tuesday night at NYIT for a key East Coast Conference contest. Action begins on Long Island at 7:00 p.m.
