Volleyball Opens The 2011 Season With Four-Set Win Over UMass Lowell
Freshman Biljana Savic Leads UB Offense With 19 Kills
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team opened its 2011 season on Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought, four set win over the UMass Lowell River Hawks (0-2). UB won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 28-26.
Freshman Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) led three Purple Knights in double figure kills with a match-high 19. Joining Savic in double figure kills were junior Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) with 11 and senior Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janerio, Brazil) with 10. Costa also played a strong game on defense recording a match-leading 21 digs.
Senior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil) directed the UB offense with 44 assists. She also added nine digs and four block assists on the day.
The Purple Knights return to the court on Thursday, September 8 when they open their road schedule at Southern Connecticut State University. Match time in New Haven is set for 7:00 p.m.
