Track & Field Starts 2023-24 Season With Promise
Both men’s and women’s programs kicked off their season in New Haven this weekend and showed promising signs for the coming season.
New Haven, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport men's and women's indoor track and field teams started their season this weekend at the Art Kadish Elm City Challenge hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. The men's team finished the two-day event with in 10th place while the women finished tied for fifth place with 18 points.
For the women, Emilia Russell (So., Kingston, U.K.) won the pentathlon with a total score of 2963 and posting collegiate personal bests in all five events. She ran the 55-meter hurdles in 10.02 seconds and the 800-meter race in a time of 2:31.28. Russell cleared a height of 1.51 meters in the high jump and leapt 4.86 meters on the long jump. She rounded off the five-event performance with a throw of 10.34 meters in the shotput.
The 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Emilia Russell, Genevieve Fayo (Fr., Cornwall, N.Y.), Emily Stuart (So., Rising Sun, Md.) and Lynzie Lawton (Canton, N.Y.) took fourth place with a time of 4:40.43.
Kate Thill (Fr., Goetzingen, Luxembourg) finished the 1000-meter race ion a time of 3:36.20, good for ninth place.
Morgan Dodge (Fr., Watertown, Conn.) took ninth place in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing the race in a time of 10.56 seconds.
On the men's side, freshman Damian Coles (Philadelphia, Pa.) produced a personal best as he finished the 400-meter race in a time of 53.86 and took seventh place.
In the men's heptathlon, John Panzera (Fr., Haddam, Conn.) finished in seventh place with a final tally of 3780 points.
The men's 4x400 meter relay squad of John Panzera, Tayshaun Bookal (Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y.), Nicholas Migliarese (Fr., Riverview, Fla.) and Damian Coles took sixth place with a time of 3:48.47.
Up next, UB will be back after the holiday break on Friday, December 12th as they compete in the I-95 Showdown hosted by Southern Connecticut State University.
