Purple Knight Swimmers Compete In UB Biathlon
Teams Continue To Prepare For 2011-12 Seasons
Bridgeport, Conn. – Newcomer junior Ilkka Hanhineva (Pietarsaari, Finland) was the top team and men's finisher at the 2011 UB Swimming Purple Knight Biathlon held at Seaside Park on the Long Island Sound. Freshmen Alja Tavcar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) and Maria Trubitsyna (Moscow, Russia) tied for first on the women's side and finished tied for sixth in the team race. Finishing in second & third for the men were freshmen Vlad Paskas (Zrenjanin, Serbia) and Igor Vulesevic (Zrenjanin, Serbia) and completing the top three on the women's side was junior Anna Krasnowska (Kedzierzyn-Kozle, Poland), who took eighth in the Team Race.
The Biathlon consists of a one-mile beach run from the sand volleyball courts at Seaside Park to the base of the lighthouse breakwater, immediately followed by a one-mile swim following the beach course back to the start-finish Line. The course measure 1.07 miles each way for a total race distance of 2.14 miles. With a crystal blue sky, air temps in the mid 70's and water temperature of 70, conditions could not have been better for the Bridgeport swimming teams second-ever Biathlon. There was a 2009 Biathlon on a shorter course, but weather and cold water caused the cancellation of last year's event.
