Four New Swimmers Set To Join UB Program For Spring Semester of 2011
Multiple-Time Women’s Romanian National Champion Ioana "Alex" Popa And Three More Talented Swimmers Set To Join Bridgeport Program
Bridgeport, Conn.-University of Bridgeport head men's and women's swimming coach Brad Flood has announced signing of the multiple-time Women's Romanian National Swimming Champion Ioana "Alex" Popa will attend UB starting sping semester of 2011. Popa, from Pitesti Arges, Romania, was the 2010 Long Course Romanian National Swimming Champion in the 100-meter Breaststroke (1:12.63), 200-meter Breaststroke (2:34.78), 200-meter Individual Medley (2:22.88) and the 50-meter Backstroke (30.55) this past summer. This past weekend, Ioana competed in the 2010 Short Course National Championships held December 2 – 5 in Hunedoara, Romania and claimed national championships in three events: the 100-meter Breaststroke (1:10.33), 200-meter Breaststroke (2:29.96) and the 50-meter Backstroke (28.84). In addition to her national titles, Popa garnered six second place finishes: 800-meter Freestyle (9:12.26), 400-meter Freestyle (4:25.01), 400-meter Individual Medley (5:00.33), 200-meter Individual Medley (2:19.00), 200-meter Freestyle (2:05.27) and the 100-meter Individual Medley (1:04.72).
Popa joins three other new spring 2011 signees for the UB men's and women's swimming teams. Ilka Oberle (Schwanau, Germany), a distance freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke swimmer will also join the women's team. On the men's side Oscar Pereiro, from Arzua, Spain, a backstroke and sprint freestyle specialist Daniel Fazekas, who hails from Budapest, Hungary, a top-notch competitor in the butterfly, backstroke and IM events will join the Purple Knights for the Spring of 2011.
