Women's Soccer Wraps Up 2021 Regular Season With 4-0 Blanking Of Staten Island
Saturday's Win Is Team's Fifth In A Row
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team closed out its 2021 regular season on Saturday at the College of Staten Island with a 4-0 East Coast Conference victory, as the Purple Knights scored two goals in each half. UB is now 11-6-1 overall, winners of five straight matches and unbeaten in seven contests. The Purple Knights finish with a 5-3-1 conference record but unfortunetly do not qualify for this season's ECC Championship Tournament, as Roberts Wesleyan topped Lincoln today to claim the fourth and final spot in the tourney. Bridgeport's fate to continue its season now is in the hands of the NCAA Regional Committee who will announce the seven teams from the East Region that qualify for the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament on Monday, November 15. In last week's regional rankings, UB was slotted at number five. The three winners of the Northeast-10, East Coast and Central Atlantic Collegiate conference tournaments will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship with four at-large bids up for grabs in the East Region.
On Saturday, sophomore Morgan Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) got the Purple Knights on the board first with her first career tally just 11:41 into play.
Classmate Tori Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted her first of two goals on the day just under two before halftime when she found the back of the net off a corner from Samantha St. Pierre (So., Granby, Conn.). Tori now has four goals on the year.
Smith's second goal on Saturday came in the 79th minute, and freshman Livia Busin (Zurich, Switzerland) closed out the scoring in the match with just 4:33 to play, putting home her first career goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Umea, Sweden) recorded her sixth shutout of the season making two saves.
UB outshot CSI, 18-3, in the game.
The Dolphins wrap up their season at 3-14-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the ECC.
