Newark, Del.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team picked up its first road win of the season and evened its 2021 overall record at 6-6-0 with a 2-1 non-conference victory over the host Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats in the First State on Tuesday afternoon. The triumph also gives the Purple Knights three victories in their last four outings. Wilmington is now 5-3-2 on the year.
UB opened the scoring in the 11th minute of play when graduate student Andrea Basilcato (Guilford, Conn.) put home her third goal of 2021 off an assist from freshman Livia Busin (Zurich Switzerland).
The teams would head into the halftime break knotted at 1-1 after the Wildcats tied things up with a goal in the 22nd minute of action off a corner kick.
Sophomore Evelyn Hammer (Littleton, Colo.) netted the game-winning goal on Tuesday, her third tally of the season, when she found pay dirt following a scramble in front of goal off a corner kick in the 77th minute.
Both teams took fired off seven shots in the match, and Wilmington held an 8-3 advantage in corners on the afternoon.
UB freshman goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Umea, Sweden) made four saves to earn the victory in net for the Purple Knights.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team returns to Knights Field on Saturday afternoon for a key East Coast Conference tilt against the Daemen College Wildcats. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in the Park City.
