Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team picked up its first East Coast Conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights snapped a four-match losing streak with a 3-1 home triumph over the visiting D'Youville College Saints. UB is now 4-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the ECC. D'Youville slips to 3-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play.
Sophomore Evelyn Hammer (Littleton, Colo.) opened the scoring for the Purple Knights at the 14:42 mark of the first half when she found the back of the net off a feed from classmate Samantha St. Pierre (Granby, Conn.).
UB upped its led to 2-0 at halftime when junior Riley Soares (Lincoln, R.I.) headed home a goal off a corner kick from senior Carly Zajac (Stratford, Conn.) in the 26th minute.
Bridgeport increased its lead to 3-0 just 5:10 into the second half when freshman Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J.) poked home a cross from graduate student Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) for her second goal of the season.
Maggie Smith scored for D'Youville with just under 10 minutes to play in the contest to spoil the Bridgeport clean sheet.
Freshman Clara Karlsson (Umea, Sweden) and junior Helena Dahlstrom (Stockholm, Sweden) saw time in net for the Purple Knights, as Karlsson earned the win making one save on the afternoon.
Bridgeport outshot the Saints, 18-4 on the day, and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team steps out of East Coast Conference play with a non-conference home contest versus Holy Family University on Wednesday night. Game time at Knights Field is slated for 7:00 p.m.
