Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team got a first half goal from sophomore Samantha St. Pierre (Granby, Conn.) and a second half score from freshman Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J.), as the Purple Knights held on to post a 2-1 home win over the visiting Chargers of Dominican (N.Y.) College on Sunday afternoon in the Park City. The win gives the Purple Knights three triumphs in a row, as UB is now 3-1-0 on the season. The Chargers remain winless on the season at 0-3-0.
St. Pierre got Bridgeport on the scoreboard first with her first career goal at the 28:33 mark of play off an assist classmate Evelyn Hammer (Littleton, Colo.)
The Purple Knights would then increase their advantage to 2-0 when Washington found the back of the net for her first career marker off an assist from graduate student Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) with just under 10 minutes to play in regulation.
The Chargers would not go quietly though, as Alyana Gonel scored with 5:21 to play to cut the UB lead to 2-1, but the Purple Knights held firm the rest of the match to earn to win.
Bridgeport held a 20-9 advantage in shots on the afternoon and took nine corners to DC's two.
Freshman goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Umea, Sweden) made three saves to earn the win in net for UB, and Lynne Garofalo had seven stops for the Chargers.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team hits the road for their first away matches of the 2021 season traveling to the Lone Star State of Texas for matches at Texas Women's University on Thursday night and Dallas Baptist University on Saturday night.
