Bridgeport, Conn.-Graduate student Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) headed home the game-winning goal, her second tally and second game-winner of 2021, with just over 12 minutes to play in regulation off a picture-perfect cross from freshman Angelina LoFranco (Greanacres, Fla.) to lift the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team to a hard-fought, 2-1, non-conference home win over the visiting Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College on Friday night. With the win, UB ups its season mark to 2-1-0. GBC is now 1-2-0 on the young season.
Goldey-Beacom got on the board first in the match when Alyssa Ruggieri finished a cross from Kira Cohen at the 20:42 mark of action.
UB would knot the match at 1-1 just under four minutes later when freshman Kate Thill (Goetzingen, Luxemburg) netted her first goal in a Purple Knights' uniform off a feed from junior Leigh-Ann Ramsey (Bronx. N.Y.), and that is how the match would stay until Basilicato's game-winner in the second half.
Bridgeport outshot Goldey-Beacom, 15-6, on the night and took six corners to the Lightning's one.
Freshman goalkeeper Clara Karlsson (Umea, Sweden) made three saves, all in the second half, to pick up the win in net for the Purple Knights.
Up next, the Bridgeport women's soccer team closes out its' four-match season-opening homestand on Sunday afternoon, when UB host the Chargers of Dominican (N.Y.) College at 1:00 p.m.
