Purple Knights Score Early And Late As Jennifer Wendelius Earns Her Third Clean Sheet Of 2016
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team scored early and scored late, as the Purple Knights had one of their most dominating performances so far in the 2016 season, as UB blanked the visiting Assumption College Greyhounds, 4-0, on Monday night in non-conference action. With the victory, Bridgeport has won three matches in a row, and the Purple Knights are now 6-3-0 overall. With the loss, the Greyhounds are an even 5-5-1 in 2016.
Senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.) opened the scoring for UB with her fifth goal of the year when she found the back of the net just 6:39 in action off a beautiful pass from graduate student Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) on a play that began with a long ball from junior Ariana Weingrad (Hicksville, N.Y.).
Colligan and Agirre would team up for UB's second of the night just over 10 minutes later with Colligan slipping a nice through ball to Agirre, who also scored her fifth goal of the year.
Graduate student Amanda Moura (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) would give the Purple Knights 3-0 lead which they took into halftime, when she headed home a corner kick off the foot of senior Nicola Worthington (Chorley, England) at the 24:16 mark of play. Moura now has four goals so far this season.
Idoia Agirre would complete the scoring in the match with just under four seconds to play when she put home her team-leading sixth goal of 2016.
On the night, Bridgeport outshot Assumption, 30-16.
UB sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made a season-high seven saves in the win to post her third shutout and grab her fifth win of the year.
