Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The host and regional second-seed, Mercy College Mavericks scored two goals in just under seven minutes late in the second half to defeat the visiting and regional number three seed, University of Bridgeport Purple Knights, 2-1, in the Second Round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Tournament on Sunday afternoon. UB closes out its 2014 season at 14-5-2 overall, and Mercy moves on to face the College of St. Rose in next weekend's NCAA Round of 16 with a 17-2-1 overall mark.
Sunday's match was scoreless until the 69:59 mark when Mercy's Jenna Petel headed home a corner kick from MacKenzie Cochrane to break the 0-0 deadlock.
The Mavericks would up their lead to 2-0 at the 76:37 mark when Jessica Carrillo capitalized on a Purple Knights' turnover to net her ninth goal of the year.
Bridgeport would spoil Mercy goalkeeper Nicole Augustine's shutout bid with 2:15 to play when freshman Hailey Marquis (Middlebury, Conn.) tallied her first collegiate goal off an assist from junior Flo Gamby (Goffs Oaks, England).
On the afternoon, UB outshot Mercy, 13-7. Augustine made five saves on the day, and Bridgeport freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Occhipinti (Islip, N.Y.) made four stops.
