Bridgeport Women's Soccer Grabs Final Spot In 2014 ECC Championship Tourney With 3-0 Home Win Over Molloy
UB Now 12-3-2 Overall And 5-3-1 In Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-Needing a win to grab the fourth and final spot in the 2014 East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament, the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team got the job done with a 3-0 home shutout of the visiting Molloy College Lions, on a cold, wet and windy Senior Day Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Purple Knights, who head into the ECC Championship on a three-match winning streak and unbeaten in their last five matches, are now 12-3-1 overall and 5-3-1 in conference play. Molloy wraps up its 2014 season at 5-8-1 overall and 5-4-0 in the ECC. Bridgeport also finished the 2014 regular season undefeated at Knights Field with a 7-0-0 record.
With both squads fighting the elements, the match was scoreless until just before halftime when junior Flo Gamby (Goffs Oaks, England) poked home her third goal of the season off an assist from junior Gabby Reis (West Haven, Conn.) just 32 seconds before the break to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead.
UB came out strong in the second half increasing its lead to 2-0 when senior Danielle Puddefoot (Slough, England) banged home her team-high ninth goal of the season just 7:11 into the second stanza.
Sophomore Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) netted the Purple Knights' final goal of the afternoon at the 69:56 mark after assisting on Puddefoot's tally.
Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Occhipinti (Islip, N.Y.) made one save facing three shots on the day to notch her eighth solo clean sheet of 2014. As a team, Bridgeport has 12 shutouts so far this season.
Before Saturday's match, the University of Bridgeport honored the five seniors on this year's women's soccer team: Danielle Puddefoot, Paige Adamsky, Ashleigh Berg, Gillian Munro and Stephanie D'Andrea.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will travel to number one seed LIU Post on Wednesday, November 5 for an ECC Championship Tournament semifinal matchup. Action is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
