Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team blasted the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, 7-0, on Knights Field on Wednesday afternoon. The victory lifts the Purple Knights overall record to 11-3-2, and UB is now 4-3-1 in the East Coast Conference. STAC closes out its 2014 campaign at 6-7-2 overall and 2-6-1 in conference play. Wednesday's win also sets up an important season finale at home for the Purple Knights on Saturday at 12 noon versus Molloy. If UB wins on Saturday, they advance to the ECC Championship Tournament. A loss or a tie for Bridgeport gives the final spot in the 2014 ECC Championship to Molloy.
In Wednesday's win, senior Danielle Puddefoot (Slough, England) notched a hat trick plus added two assists. Danielle now has a team-high eight goals and four assists for UB-best 20 points so far in 2014.
Bridgeport sophomore Amanda Moura (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had one goal and two assists against St. Thomas Aquinas to raise her season totals to seven goals and three assists for 17 points.
Freshman Sophie Sorkvist (Orebro, Sweden) netted two goals and had one assist for the winners on Wednesday.
Freshman Ariana Weingrad (Hicksville, N.Y.) with a goal and sophomore Lauren Mengel (Gilberstville, Pa.) with an assist completed the Purple Knights' scoring on the day.
Wednesday's seven goals are single-match 2014 season high for Bridgeport.
UB freshman goalkeepers Kaitlin Occhipinti (Islip, N.Y.) and Ava Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) each made one save to share the clean sheet for the victors. Bridgeport now has recorded 11 shutouts as team so far this season.
Once again, the UB women's soccer team closes out its 2014 regular season at home on Saturday, November 1 with a Senior Day contest versus Molloy College that will kickoff at 12 noon, and if the Purple Knights win they clinch the final spot in the 2014 ECC Championship Tournament.
