Women's Soccer Runs Winning Streak To Seven With Hard-Fought 2-1 ECC Home Win Over Previously Undefeated Mercy College
# 20 Purple Knights Are Now 7-1-0 Overall And 3-0-0 In Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team ran its winning streak to seven matches in a row with a 2-1 home East Coast Conference victory on Saturday afternoon over the previously undefeated Mavericks of Mercy College. The Purple Knights are now 7-1-0 overall and an unblemished 3-0-0 in conference play. Mercy is now 6-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the ECC.
Sophomore Flo Gamby (Goffs Oak, England) got UB on the board first on Saturday when she netted her team-high fourth goal of the season 17:40 in to play when she picked up a loose ball and fired it into the far left corner of the net.
Classmate Fanny Fellevik (Stockholm, Sweden) scored what provided to be the game-winning goal at the 78:36 mark, as she put home a rebound of her own shot off the post to give the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead. Fellevik had just entered the match as a substitute minutes before scoring her first goal of 2013.
Mercy made UB fans hold their breath a bit when Crystal Mena scored her fourth goal of the year with just over four minutes to play making the score 2-1 which would prove to the final score.
Bridgeport outshot Mercy on the afternoon, 10-4.
The UB women's soccer team will look to run its winning streak to eight matches on Wednesday evening when they host Georgian Court University in a non-conference clash at Knights Field. Action is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
