Women's Soccer Nipped By Dowling, 1-0, In ECC Championship Final
Purple Knights Finish 2012 With An 11-6-2 Overall Record
Bridgeport, Conn.-Dowling College's Lindsay Thompson scored the match's only goal with 17:37 remaining in regulation, and DC goalkeeper Melissa Guglielmo made seven saves, including stopping a University of Bridgeport penalty kick with 23:00 minutes to play in the second half, as the visiting and fourth-seeded Golden Lions defeated the host and second-seeded Purple Knights in the 2012 East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship Final on Sunday afternoon. The victory gives Dowling its second consecutive ECC women's soccer title, and DC moves onto to next week's NCAA Division II Championship Tournament with a 13-3-2 overall record. UB closes out its 2012 season with an 11-6-2 overall mark.
For her outstanding play in both Friday's semifinal, a 2-1 win for Dowling over top-seeded LIU Post, and Sunday's final, Dowling's Melissa Guglielmo was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2012 ECC Women's Soccer Championship.
Bridgeport goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Jr., Tocksfors, Sweden) play a fine match for the Purple Knights making six saves. The match finished with UB team taking 11 shots to Dowling's nine. Bridgeport outshot Dowling 9-5 in the second half and eight of the Purple Knights' shots were on goal.
UB's 11 wins during 2012 mark the twelfth straight year the Purple Knights have reached double-figure wins in a season.
