UB Women's Soccer Falls To UMass Lowell In 2012 Season Opener
River Hawks Top Purple Knights, 2-0, In Battle of Nationally-Ranked Teams
Lowell, Mass.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team opened its 2012 season at UMass Lowell on Friday night in a rematch of a 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Second Round game which UMass Lowell advanced on penalty kicks, and the River Hawks again bested the Purple Knights as they posted a 2-0 win as part of their season-opening tournament. UB entered play ranked number 12 in the NSCAA preseason Division II Women's soccer rankings; while UML was ranked number 17 in the same poll.
UMass Lowell scored one goal in each half, as Keanna Santos tallied in the first half and Brittany Russo hit the back of the net in the second 45 minutes.
The River Hawks outshot the Purple Knights, 9-6, on the night.
UB junior goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Tocksfors, Sweden) made three saves on Friday night. Jill Carlson picked up the clean sheet in net for the winners.
Friday's loss by the Purple Knights is their first defeat since the final match of the 2010 season after posting a 16-0-2 record last season.
Bridgeport will look to get in the win column on Sunday afternoon when they face American International College to wrap up play in the UML Classic. Action gets underway at 2:00 p.m.
