UB To Face Queens In ECC Semifnals
Bridgeport, Conn.-Senior Linda Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) scored three goals and added four assists, and sophomore Asia Pulse (New Haven, Conn.) scored two time to help lead the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team to a 10-0 home rout over the St, Thomas Aquinas College Lady Spartans on Saturday afternoon. Velaj has now scored a team-best 17 goals so far in 2010. With the win, UB is now 13-3-1 overall (winners of six matches in a row), and the Purple Knights close out their conference schedule at 5-1-1. STAC finishes 2010 at 1-15-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the ECC.
Bridgeport now heads into the 2010 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament as the number three seed, and UB will travel to number two seed, Queens (N.Y.) College on Friday, November 5th. Queens edged Bridgeport, 2-1 in overtime, during the regular season.
Other goal scorers for the Purple Knights on Saturday were Katie Stanley (JR, Oxon, England), Danielle Weir (JR, Bo'Ness, Scotland), Gabbie Giaquinto (FR, West Haven, Conn.), Cerci Harris (SR, Bury St. Edmunds, Wales) and senior Rakel Hinriksdottir (Reykjavík, Iceland). Hinriksdottir and senior Elin Svavarsdottir (Reykjavík, Iceland) each had two assists in Saturday's victory.
Goalkeepers Julia Colley (JR, Harlow, England) and Rosa Neary (FR, Sheffield, England) shared the clean sheet against the Lady Spartans.
