Four Goals By Linda Velaj Helps UB Women's Soccer To 6-1 Win Over Wilmington (Del.) University
Purple Knights Have Now Won Five Macthes In A Row
Bridgeport, Conn.-Senior Linda Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) scored four goals to raise her team-leading season total to 14, as she helped the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team cruise to an easy 6-1 non-conference home win over the Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats on Thursday afternoon. The win is the Purple Knights fifth in a row, and the team is now 12-3-1 overall. Wilmington is now 13-4-0 on the season.
Velaj opened the scoring on Thursday afternoon just 22 seconds into the match, and then she scored what proved to the game-winning goal in the 12th minute off an assist from sophomore Asia Pulse (New Haven, Conn.). Her other two goals came in the second half at the 52:43 mark and at 54:12.
UB's other goals against the Wildcats came from senior Elin Svavarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) off a free kick in the 16th minute, and freshman Penny Cote (Stamford, Conn.) netted her first collegiate goal with 19 seconds to play in the match.
Junior goalkeeper Julia Colley (Harlow, England) picked up her fifth win of the season in net for Bridgeport. Colley made four saves on the day, and had her shut out spoiled when the Wildcats scored with just over 15 minutes to play in the game.
The Purple Knights close out the 2010 regular season at home on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. with an East Coast Conference match against St. Thomas Aquinas College. Saturday's match will also be Senior Day.
After closing out the regular season on Saturday, Bridgeport will play on the road in the ECC Championship Tournament Semifinals which will be played on Friday, November 5th.
