Velaj's OT Goal Gives Women's Soccer 2-1 Win Over UMass Lowell
Women's Soccer Evens Mark at 1-1 With Comeback Victory
Springfield, Mass.-Senior Linda Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal 3:54 into the first overtime period to give the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team a 2-1 win over the UMass Lowell River Hawks in a match played at the AIC Classic in Springfield, Mass. on Saturday night. Velaj's goal his her second in as many matches played so far in 2010. With the win, UB is 1-1-0 on the season. UML is now 0-1-1.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 75:16 mark when freshman Berglind Bjarnadottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) netted the first goal of her college career off an assist from junior Katie Stanley (Oxon, England) to tie things up at 1-1.
UB freshman goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Tockfors, Sweden) made nine saves to pick up the win in her first start of 2010.
The Bridgeport women's soccer is next in action on Tuesday, September 7th, when the Purple Knights play their 2010 home opener against St. Anselm College. Action gets underway at Knights Field at 6:00 p.m.
