Women's Lacrosse Opens 2021 Campaign With A 10-9 Overtime Victory Over D'Youville
Junior Addison Plume Scored Saturday's Game-Winning Goal 1:07 Into Extra Time
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team got its 2021 season off to a fine start on Saturday afternoon with 10-9 overtime East Coast Conference home win over the visiting D'Youville College Saints (0-3, 0-1 ECC). Junior Addison Plume (Glen Arm, Md.) scored the game-winning goal off a free position shot 1:07 into extra time. Plume also added two assists in Saturday's season opener to finish with a three-point day.
Three other Purple Knights finished with three points on the day, as senior Courtney Hylok (Muskegon, Mich.) and sophomore Tereza Kreuzova (Prague, Czech Republic), each netted three goals, plus senior Giselle Hall (Fairport, N.Y.) had one goal and two assists for the winners.
Hylock had a fine all-around game for the Purple Knights chipping in four grounds balls with four caused turnovers, plus she contributed one draw control. Kreuzova had a game-high six draw controls on Saturday, and she scooped up a pair of ground balls.
Junior Jessica Kinser (Voorhees, N.J.), with a goal, and freshman Evelyn Hammer (Littleton, Colo.), with an assist, rounded out the six Purple Knights that had points in Saturday's opener.
Junior goalie Abbie Jones (Rising Sun, Md.) was strong in net for Bridgeport making 13 saves to earn the victory and collecting two ground balls. D'Youville outshot UB, 30-21 on the day.
UB jumped out to a 4-0 lead just over 12 minutes into play on Saturday; only to see the visiting Saints cut the deficit to 5-3 at the half.
D'Youville would then score five of the next six goals to grab an 8-6 lead with 12:21 to play in the second half, but the Purple Knights stormed back to tally the next three goals to take 9-8 advantage with just 1:10 to play in the second stanza before the visitors would send the contest into overtime on a free positing goal by Isabella Lucania with just four seconds to play in regulation.
Bethany Wolcott led the Saints with three goals on the afternoon.
Up next, the Purple Knights open the road portion of their 2021 schedule with a trip to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday March 30. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
