Women's Lacrosse Rallies But Falls 10-9 In Overtime At Roberts Wesleyan In 2017 Season Finale
Purple Knights Send Game Into OT With A Goal With Just Six Seconds to Play In Regulation
Rochester, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team scored the final three goals of the second half to send the game into overtime tied at 9-9, as junior Abigail Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.) found the back of the net with her second goal of the day with six second remaining in regulation off an assist from freshman Barbara Orsini (N. Babylon, N.Y.), but the host Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks tailed just 34 seconds into overtime to notch a 10-9 East Coast Conference women's lacrosse victory on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Purple Knights finish the 2017 with a 9-6 overall record and a 3-5 ECC mark. RWC now advances into the 2017 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament as the number four seed with a 4-4 conference record and a 7-10 overall ledger.
Orsini finished the afternoon with four points, as she also had three goals for UB. Senior Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) and sophomore Courtney Forry (Reinholds, Pa.), each had two goals for the Purple Knights.
Bridgeport outshot Roberts Wesleyan, 31-20, in the contest, but Redhawks' goalkeeper Shannon Knapp made 15 saves on the day to help her team to the win.
UB freshman Joanna Muniz (Queens, N.Y.) had two assists on the day.
