Bridgeport Women's Lacrosse Program Shines In The Classroom
Purple Knights Honored By The IWLCA And The ECC
Bridgeport, Conn.-Along with receiving the 2016 East Coast Conference's Academic Team of Excellence Award for being the program with the highest grade point average in its respective sport for the first time ever and having 10 student-athletes earn spots on the 2015-16 ECC's Commissioner's Honor Roll with grade point averages of 3.25 or better, the University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team continued to make waves academically, as the Purple Knights received several academic awards from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).
UB has been selected a 2016 IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad. In order to qualify for this prestigious honor, the women's lacrosse team must have posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the year.
Two upperclassmen were also recognized by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association with a place on the 2016 IWLCA Academic Honor Roll, as senior Megan Hughes (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and junior Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) have been honored for their academic prowess. To be eligible for the IWLCA Honor Roll, student-athletes must be nominated by their schools and have achieved at least junior status academically and had a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater.
The 10 members of the Bridgeport women's lacrosse team, who earned spots on the ECC's Commissioner's Honor Roll, which helps to uphold the East Coast Conference's mission of promoting the total person and the ability to excel not only in the athletic arena but also in the classroom, are: Senior Megan Hughes (Mastic Beach, N.Y.); Juniors Julia Gasston (Auckland, New Zealand), Kerry Mackinnon (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.), and Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.); Sophomore Abigail Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.); Freshman Geovanna Ferreira (Mato Grosso Do Sul, Brazil), Amanda Fitzpatrick (New Hampton, N.Y.), Courtney Forry (Reinholds, Pa.), Alexis Malvaso (Jordan, N.Y.), and Isabella Theberge (Atkinson, N.H.).
