Women's Lacrosse Battles But Falls At Mercy
Purple Knights Continue Four-Game Road Swing At UDC On Saturday Afternoon
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team battled on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy College, but the Purple Knights came up just shy of their first East Coast Conference victory of 2016, falling to the host Mavericks, 15-12, after trailing 8-2 with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half. The Purple Knights are now 4-7 overall this season and 0-5 in conference play. Mercy raises its overall mark to 8-4, and they are now 3-2 in the ECC.
Sophomore Abigail Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.) led the UB offense with five goals on the afternoon. Junior Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) added three goals, and classmate Kerry Mackinnon (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) chipped in two for the Purple Knights.
Junior Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) had one goal and two assists for UB. Freshman Courtney Forry (Reinholds, Pa.) netted the other Bridgeport goal, and sophomore Arianna Weingrad (Hicksville, N.Y.) completed the scorers for the Purple Knights' with two assists on the day.
Senior goalie Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) had 14 saves on the afternoon for Bridgeport.
Up next, the UB women's lacrosse team will continue its four-game road trip by traveling to our Nation's Capital on Saturday to take on the University of the District of Columbia. Game time at UDC is set for 1:30 p.m.
