Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team got off to a quick start in its 2016 season opener on Saturday afternoon at Knights Filed scoring the first three goals of the afternoon and holding a 4-1 lead with just over 6:30 played in the contest, but he visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks fought back to grab an 18-9 East Coast Conference victory. RWC took a 7-6 lead at the half and outscored the Purple Knights 11-2 in the second half, as the Redhawks raise their season record to 2-3, and they are 1-0 in conference play.
Junior Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) led the UB offense with four goals in the 2016 season opener, and classmate Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) and sophomore Abigail Benesh (Horesheads, N.Y.), each chipped in two goals and assist for Purple Knights. Freshman Courtney Forry (Reiholds, Pa.) netted Bridgeport's other goal on the afternoon.
Lauren Dunn and Ali Fox led Roberts Wesleyan, as they each netted six goals.
Up next, the UB women's lacrosse team will look for its first win of 2016 at Caldwell University on Wednesday, March 9. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
