Women's Lacrosse Nipped By St. Thomas Aquinas, 12-11, In Overtime In Regular Season Finale
Team Must Await Weekend Results To See If It Will Qualify For ECC Championship Tournament
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team closed out its record-setting 2015 regular season with a tough 12-11 overtime East Coast Conference home loss against the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field. UB closes out the regular season at 12-4 overall and 4-4. STAC is now 9-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Purple Knights must now await the results of this weekend's games involving Molloy and Roberts Wesleyan to see if the team will advance to next weekend's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament.
St. Thomas Aquinas' Kellie Kucinski, who scored a game-high five goals on the afternoon, netted the only goal of overtime when she converted a free position shot with 4:06 remianing in the six extra minutes.
UB would send the game into overtime when freshman Abigail Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored her team-high third goal of the day with 3:39 to play in regulation.
Sophomores Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.Y.) and Katlyn Dempsey (Elmont, N.Y.) each had two goals for UB in the loss, and Lauren Mengel (So., Gilbertsville, Pa.), Gabrielle Valela (Sr., Lindenhurst, N.Y.), Kerry Mackinnon (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Shealyn Scully (Sr., Huntington, N.Y.), each had a single tally for the Purple Knights. Valela goal is her 50th of the season.
Bridgeport junior goalkeeper Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) made six saves on the afternoon.
