Fast Start Propels Women's Lacrosse To 10-8 Win Over Nyack
Team Reaches 10-Win Plateau For First Time In Program's Five-Year History
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team faced the Warriors of Nyack College in a non-conference contest under the lights on Wednesday, and UB pulled out a 10-8 home victory. The win improves the Purple Knights to 10-3 overall in 2015, and the Warriors drop to 3-11. Wednesday's win gives the Bridgeport women's lacrosse program its first season in double-digit wins in the program's five-year history.
Wednesday's game proved to be a tale of two halves and a series of runs, as UB jumped out to an 8-0 lead over midway through the first half, before Nyack notched its first goal of the game with 5:15 left in the opening stanza. Bridgeport sophomore Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) had a hat trick; while sophomore Katlyn Dempsey (Elmont, N.Y.) and senior Shealyn Scully (Huntington, N.Y.) pitched in two goals apiece during the 8-0 run. Nyack closed out the period with the final two goals of the opening 30 minutes to make the halftime score, 8-2, in favor of Bridgeport.
In the second half, the Warriors went on 5-0 run of their own to close out the game. With 7:19 left in the game and the score 10-3, Nyack's Karis Walborn tallied two goals and Lauren Lebo scored the final three of the game, but the Warriors were unable to complete the comeback as time ran out.
Junior Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) made nine stops in goal for the Purple Knights on the night.
The Bridgeport women's lacrosse team is back on the field under the lights this Friday for Senior Night as they face the Firebirds of University of the District of Columbia in an East Coast Conference tilt. Opening draw is set for 7:00 p.m.
