Women's Lacrosse Battles Dowling To The End
Purple Knights Fall To Nationally-Ranked Golden Lions, 9-6
Shirley, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team travelled to Dowling College on Saturday afternoon, and the Purple Knights gave the nationally-ranked Golden Lions all they could handle in a 9-6 East Coast Conference loss. With the loss, the Purple Knights are now 9-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Dowling is now 9-4 overall and 4-1 the ECC.
Trailing 5-2 at the half, Bridgeport scored three of the first four goals in the second half to make the score 6-5 in favor of the hosts before Dowling scored the next two goals to take an 8-5 lead which they never relinquished.
Senior Emily Catalano (N. Babylon, N.Y.) and freshman Abigail Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.) each had two goals on the day for the Purple Knights, and senior Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded two points on a goal and an assists, and sophomore Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) also had two points on a pair of assists.
Freshman Ava Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) had UB's other goal.
Junior goalie Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) made seven saves in net on the afternoon.
The UB women's lacrosse team will look to get back in the win column at home on Wednesday evening when the Purple Knights host Nyack College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
