Balanced Scoring Attack Helps UB Women's Lacrosse Move To 7-0 On The Season With A 13-11 ECC Win Over Mercy
Six Different Players Score Goals As UB Moves To 3-0 In Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-On a blustery, snowy Saturday afternoon, the University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team pulled out a 13-11 home victory over the visiting Mercy College Mavericks in East Coast Conference action. Bridgeport ups its overall record to an unblemished 7-0, and UB is 3-0 in ECC play. Mercy drops to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in conference action. Seniors Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Emily Catalano (N. Babylon N.Y.) led the Purple Knights' well-balanced scoring attack on Saturday, as the each netted a hat trick. Senior Shealyn Scully (Huntington, N.Y.), sophomore Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) and freshman Abigail Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals apiece for the winners, and sophomore Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) completed the Bridgeport scoring with a single tally.
Mercy opened up the scoring over five minutes in the contest with Nicole Kline scoring on a free position shot. The teams traded goals over the next ten minutes before Bridgeport tallied four consecutive goals from four different players, making the score 5-2; a lead the Purple Knights would never relinquish. Again the teams traded goals to end the period going into half with the home team leading 6-4.
UB used two, three goal runs in the second half to finish off the victory. After Mercy opened up the scoring in the second half, Shealyn Scully scored off on an assist from Abigail Benesh ,and Valela netted two of her three goals to extend the lead to 9-5 with just over twenty minutes left in the game. Mercy regained some momentum making the score 10-9 with twelve minutes left, before the Purple Knights rattled off two goals from Catalano and one from Rieg to make the score 13-9. Mercy scored the final two goals of the game, but was unable to get any closer. Junior goalkeeper Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) nine huge saves in the win for Bridgeport to stay unbeaten on the year.
The UB women's lacrosse team returns to its home turf Wednesday to face ECC opponent LIU Post with opening draw set for 4:00 p.m.
