Purple Knights Wrap Up 2014 Women's Lacrosse Season With 17-3 Win At UDC
Victory Is Team's First Conference Win In Four-Year History Of The Program
Washington, D.C.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team closed out its 2014 season on Sunday with a 17-3 East Coast Conference road win over the host University of the District of Columbia Firebirds. Sunday's victory is the first conference win in the four-year history of the UB women's lacrosse program. The Purple Knights, who won three of their last four contests this season, closed out 2014 with a 4-13 overall record and a 1-7 conference record. UDC, a first-year program, closed out this season winless at 0-10 overall and 0-7 in the ECC.
On Sunday, the Firebirds took a quick 2-1 lead just over five minutes in the game, but Bridgeport responded with 10 straight scores to grab an 11-2 halftime lead, as the Purple Knights would cruise for the rest of the day.
Junior Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), who finished this season with a team-high 44 goals, led the UB offense on Sunday with four goals and two assists. Classmate Shealyn Scully (Huntington, N.Y.) added three goals and one assist for the winners. Allie Wiggins (So. Waterford, Conn.), Megan Doyle (Grad. Student, Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and Nichole Rogers (Sr. Dallas. Texas) each chipped in two goals for the Purple Knights on Sunday.
