Purple Knights Drop Second Straight One-Goal Game After Big Comeback
Bridgeport, Conn.-A free position goal by Franklin Pierce's Megan Raposa with only 1:30 to play in the game lifted the visiting Raves to an 11-10 non-conference women lacrosse win over the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on a frigid Monday afternoon in Connecticut. Monday's action was FPU's season opener, and with the loss, UB is now 0-3 on the season having suffered one-goal losses in their last two outings.
Bridgeport trailed 9-4 at the half, but the Purple Knights stormed back with six straight goals to take a 10-9 lead with 9:03 to play. The Ravens would tie things up at 10-10 with 4:26 to go on Madeline Shopshire's fifth goal of the afternoon to set up Raposa's game-winner.
Junior Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led Bridgeport with three goals, and freshman Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) and junior Alexia Costa (Providence, R.I.), each had two goals for the Purple Knights.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) made 10 saves in between the pipes for UB.
The UB women's lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they open East Coast Conference play by hosting Dowling College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
